From idea to market validation: understanding the first customer · AllinFund
A practical approach to testing the problem, audience and demand before building a product.
A startup idea often begins with a personal observation. Yet the problem a founder sees may not carry the same importance in other people’s daily lives. The first step is to understand the situation in which a specific audience struggles. Write the problem in one sentence, identify whom it affects and record how it is currently solved. This preparation moves research from general opinions towards concrete observations.
In interviews, ask about past behaviour rather than collecting compliments about a future product. When did the customer last encounter the problem? What did they do, which alternative did they choose and what happened? A long presentation of your solution can shape the answers. Ask open questions, keep notes in a consistent format and retain personal information only with consent. Mark recurring patterns separately.
Next, turn the main assumption into a small test. This might be a simple landing page, a manually delivered service or an early prototype. Define what counts as progress before starting. Look beyond likes and views to actions such as booking a meeting, requesting a proposal or using the product again. Compare results by audience and channel.
The purpose is not to validate an idea at any cost. If results are weak, reconsider the problem, audience and offer. In the AllinFund ecosystem, research and market validation are associated with AllinUS. When preparing a research plan, document the question to be answered, participant selection, time frame and the product decision that the findings will inform.
